Two Forks…?

Have you ever heard the saying, “A good marriage is similar to being like two forks that are eating off the same plate.” It sounds silly, but it is a cute metaphor.

It suggests that a good marriage involves sharing, cooperation, and working together towards common goals. Just like two forks eating off the same plate, both people in a marriage need to be in sync, respecting each other’s space while enjoying the journey.

A good marriage is often defined by several key characteristics that help build a strong, healthy, and lasting relationship. Let’s say, you and your spouse have this marriage thing in the bag, and it all comes easy for you.  I will say, “Good job!”

Many of us need reminders and the rest just simply need help!  Here are some really good tips or call them “helpful hints” that many good unions have in their Relational Toolboxes.

  • Love and Commitment: Genuine love and a strong commitment to each other are foundational. This means being devoted to the bond through both good times and bad.

  • Communication: Open, honest, and respectful communication is vital. This includes listening to each other, expressing feelings and thoughts clearly, and resolving conflicts productively.

  • Trust and Honesty: Trust is built through authenticity and truthfulness. Being reliable and transparent with each other helps to strengthen the bond.

  • Mutual Respect: Respecting each other’s individuality, opinions, and boundaries is essential. This means valuing each other’s contributions and treating each other with compassion.

  • Forgiveness and Patience: No one is blameless. Mistakes will happen. Being able to forgive and show patience helps to maintain harmony and understanding.

  • Share Your Goals and Values: Having common goals and values can help couples work together towards a shared future. This includes aligning on important life decisions and supporting each other’s aspirations. That is not always an easy thing, because sometimes, what we aspire to is completing something that was a dream/desire from our childhood.

NOTE: This particular journey can/may be filled with past hurts and pains. You may have to “dig deep” inside yourself to help achieve the healing.

  • Quality Time Together: Investing quality time together helps to reinforce the sensitive side of both of you (yep it is in there). One of the ways to accomplish this can be through shared activities, date nights, or just goofing-off together.

  • Support and Encouragement: Being each other’s greatest ally and cheering personal growth and development is vital. Being there for each other during tough times and celebrating success together.
