Caring for the Poor is a Biblical Principle

There is a certain principle that has its roots originating from the character of GOD, and His expectations for His people. The Biblical obligation to enthusiastically care for the needy is a recurring theme throughout Scripture, emphasizing the importance of compassion, generosity, and justice.

This did not start in Matthew, when Yeshua was on the scene. It has its infancy in the Torah (5 books of Moses) and the TaNaKH (books of GOD’s Law, the prophets, and collected writings) called, “the Old Testament.” These lay a strong foundation for caring for the destitute or disadvantaged. Have you noticed any?

With numerous Laws and teachings that reflect GOD's heart for the poor, widows, orphans, and strangers, the Scriptures give us a roadmap for how to best live our lives.

In Deuteronomy 15:11, the Israelites (ADONAI’s people) are commanded, "for there will never cease to be poor in the land.” Need I remind you that Jesus also said this very statement? Therefore,  I command you to open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor in your land." This directive underscores the eternal responsibility to provide for those in need.

The Law of Moses includes specific provisions for the poor, such as the gleaning laws found in Leviticus 19:9-10, which instruct landowners not to harvest the edges of their fields or gather the gleanings, leaving them for the poor and the foreigner. This practice ensured that the needy had access to food and provisions. Does this seem fascinatingly similar to our soup kitchens, pantries, etc.?

The prophets also echo this call to justice and mercy. Isaiah 58:6-7 highlights the true fast that GOD desires: "Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house? When you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh."

In all Practicability, there are simple ways to apply GOD’s Principle. Use His Love and get to work. The call to actively care for the needy is not merely a suggestion but a command that reflects the heart (center, mind and what is important) of GOD.

Believers are encouraged to practice hospitality, generosity, and justice, recognizing that all they have is a gift from GOD; and is to be used for His glory and the good of others. In the book of James, verse 1:27 further defines pure religion as "to visit orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world."

In practical terms, this can involve supporting charitable organizations, volunteering time and resources, advocating for social justice, and personally engaging with those in need. The Biblical call to care for the needy is an obvious expression of faith and love, demonstrating the transformative power of sharing and living the Besorah (Gospel/Good News) among all who are experiencing scarceness.
